Både i Norge og andre land var det stor interesse for definisjon, avgrensing og klassifikasjon av sport, spill, idrett og friluftsliv. Jeg var fascinert av problemet og prøvde å nærme meg det ved bruk av hermeneutisk, fenomenologisk og språkanalytisk verktøy. Tanken var at klassifisering av aktiviteter kan si noe vesentlig om aktivitetenes egenart og deres dypere mening.
